This two story brick house was constructed in 1840, about 50 years after St. Andrews was founded.  It was originally owned by Harris Henderson Hatch, the son of Harris Hatch Sr. who was an important man to the new town as he was a lawyer, registrar of deeds, President of Charlotte County Bank and of the St. Andrews-Quebec Railway Company, member of the Legislative Assembly, magistrate, and a colonel in the militia.

The bricks used in the construction were dug and baked on site from the large clay deposits found in this immediate area.  The years from 1870 to the 1960's saw many different families occupy the house and it probably underwent some changes, but by 1970 it was in danger of falling apart due to deterioration and neglect.

Fortunately for all of us, Mr. and Mrs. Hector Burgess were retiring in Connecticut after a career as an engineer for the state department of transportation and wished to return to this area which was Mrs. Burgess' family home.  They purchased the house in 1970 for a small price and began to repair and rebuild it.  Extensive renovations were carried out and modern improvements took place under the watchful eye of Mr. Burgess, thus assuring our enjoyment of this wonderful old house.

In 1989 the house was bought by a dentist and his wife as a home and dental office.  They had seven children so more upgrading and improvements were made, including the conversion of the three car garage in the rear to living space.  The current dining room was the dental treatment room and the living room was the office and reception area.  It made for a very active house!

The current owners, Bob and Jura Estes, have owned the house since 1995.  We hope to maintain and enhance the property in a pleasing and appropriate manner.  The challenge, as always, is to expand and modernize without disturbing the rich heritage.
